"Vox populi, vox dei…" »is usually mistakenly believed to mean, "The voice of the people is the voice of God…",
thus implying that popular opinion is always right.
In fact the full quotation is, "Nec audienti sunt qui solet docere, 'Vox populi, vox dei'; cum tumultuositas vulgi semper insanitas proxima est."
The literal translation is: "Do not listen to those who are accustomed to teach [claim], 'The voice of the people is the voice of God', because the tumult of the masses is always close to insanity." (Cohen, J. M. & Cohen, M. J. 1960. Penguin Dictionary of Quotations.)
