The main ingredient of a thriving business is an innovative idea and a comprehensive business plan with a lot of drive and hard work.

Business idea startThis initial business idea that you came up with as a result of hours of brainstorming is a step in the right direction to get you off the ground. Keep in mind that this only serves as a framework, seeing that you will have to fill in the “picture” with a concrete selling pitch.

This so-called business plan will only be viable to extend, that you understand the marketplace and whether or not the public will want to make use of your service or buy your product.

In order to have the necessary insight, you will have to do some market research:

First and foremost your product or service should be unique in order for it to stand out above the rest and therefore must be something that people want. The only way your product or service is most likely to be successful, when it fills a gap in the existing market or exceeds the quality of the products found in the market.

Secondly, you should build a profile of your prospective customers, by understanding their specific needs. This is of the utmost importance if you are planning on promoting your company and maintaining a customer base.

Thirdly, you will have to study and explore your possible competitors. Take into serious consideration how they market their product and offer their service. If they offer a special service, think how you are going to excel in offering something that exceeds the customer’s expectations.

By now you should have come to realize that one should set your company apart from the ordinary in order to be a successful contender in the industry. Another way of doing proper research is to look at the history of your intended trade as well as the successes and failures by others. Last but not least, find out whether there are any restrictions in place that could prohibit your from starting your specific field of trade.

Keep in mind that it is so much easier to start a business based on a recognized product or service. The art lies in creating a new concept, which is also difficult, especially because there might not be an experience to base your research on. The important thing to remember, whether you are buying a franchise or starting a new company from scratch with a fresh idea, is to seek a different angle when approaching the public. Ask yourself whether your product will last or your service will go the extra mile to please the customer? People will surely want better quality at an extra cost or pay slightly more for unrivalled service.

If you are taking over an existing venture, or opening a new franchise, remember that people are used to a certain level of service. Starting any company requires commitment and a lot of hard work. Make absolutely sure that this new venture will suit your lifestyle. If you are not a risk taker, avoid starting something that has little or no reference to build your business plan on.

If this is the case and you are prepared to abide by someone else’s rules, rather start a well known company that the public have come to trust and rely on for quality service and/or products.
