Soccer, or football (as many of us know the game), is a team sport played between two teams of eleven players. Soccer is widely considered to be the most popular sport on the globe. The playing field is rectangular, with the surface consisting of grass or artificial turf. Goal posts are placed on either end of the field on the short ends.
The main object of the game is to score points by maneuvering the ball (no hands allowed) into the opponent's goal. In general play, the goalkeepers are the only players allowed to use their hands or arms to propel the ball, while the rest of the team have to use their feet (and torso or head on occasion) to kick the ball into position. The team with the most goals scored at the end of the game, wins the match. In the case of a tie at the end of the game, one of two things can happen - either a draw is declared or the match is decided by extra time and/or a penalty shootout, depending on the format of the competition.
The modern game was codified in England following the formation of The Football Association. Their 1863 Laws of the Game created the foundation for the way the sport is played today. Football is governed internationally by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, also known as FIFA. The FIFA World Cup, is held every four (4) years. This event, the most widely viewed in the world, boasts an audience twice that of the Summer Olympic Games!
